Root canal treatment is used to save a tooth when the soft tissue inside it, called the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected. Removing the affected tissue can relieve the source of symptoms and allow the tooth to remain in the mouth rather than being extracted.

Why might a root canal be needed?

Pulp damage can result from deep decay, a crack or fracture, repeated dental treatment, or an injury. Possible signs include:

• Persistent or severe toothache
• Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
• Pain when biting or chewing
• Swelling, tenderness, or a pimple-like bump on the gum
• Darkening of a tooth

Some infected teeth cause few symptoms, so an examination and dental X-rays are needed for diagnosis.

What happens during treatment?

The area is numbed, and the dentist creates a small opening in the tooth. The inflamed or infected pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned, shaped, disinfected, and filled. The tooth is then sealed. Treatment may take one or more visits depending on the tooth and the infection.

Restoring the tooth

A root canal-treated tooth may need a permanent filling or crown to protect it and restore function, especially when significant tooth structure has been lost. Your dentist will explain the recommended restoration and follow-up care.
