Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers the visible portion of a tooth. It is designed to restore shape, strength, function, and appearance when a tooth cannot be predictably repaired with a filling alone.

When might a crown be recommended?

  • A cracked, fractured, or significantly worn tooth
  • A tooth weakened by a large cavity or filling
  • A tooth being restored after root canal treatment
  • A supporting tooth for a dental bridge
  • A severely discoloured or misshapen tooth when other options are unsuitable
  • A restoration attached to a dental implant

What does treatment involve?

The dentist examines the tooth and may take X-rays. The tooth is prepared, and an impression or digital scan is taken. A temporary crown may protect the tooth while the final restoration is made. At the fitting visit, the dentist checks the fit, contacts, appearance, and bite before cementing the crown.

Crown materials

Crowns may be made from ceramic, porcelain fused to metal, metal alloys, zirconia, or other materials. Your dentist will discuss the option that suits the tooth’s location, your bite, and your preferences.

Looking after your crown

A crowned tooth still needs daily brushing and cleaning between the teeth. Contact us if a crown becomes loose, damaged, sensitive, or uncomfortable when you bite.
