Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is an infection and inflammation of the tissues that support the teeth. It often begins with gingivitis, which may cause red, swollen, or bleeding gums. Without appropriate care, some cases can progress to periodontitis and damage the bone and tissues around the teeth.

Possible signs of gum disease

  • Bleeding while brushing or cleaning between teeth
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste
  • Gums that appear to be pulling away from the teeth
  • Changes in the way teeth meet or increasing tooth mobility

Gum disease can develop with few obvious symptoms, which is why regular examinations and periodontal measurements matter.

Assessment and treatment

The dentist or hygienist will assess the gums, measure the spaces around the teeth, review risk factors, and may take X-rays to evaluate supporting bone. Treatment depends on severity and may include improved home care, professional cleaning, scaling and root planing, more frequent maintenance, or referral for advanced periodontal care.

Managing risk factors

Daily plaque control is essential. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth using the method recommended by your dental team. Smoking, diabetes, some medications, and other health factors can influence gum health, so a complete medical history is important.
