Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It fills the open space with an artificial tooth or teeth and is supported by neighbouring teeth, dental implants, or a combination selected for your situation.

Why replace a missing tooth?

A missing tooth can affect chewing, speech, appearance, and the way your remaining teeth meet. Nearby teeth may drift toward the space over time. Replacing the tooth may help restore function and maintain a more stable bite.

Types of dental bridges

  • Traditional bridge: supported by crowns placed on teeth beside the space
  • Cantilever bridge: supported from one side in carefully selected situations
  • Resin-bonded bridge: attached to adjacent teeth, often with less tooth preparation
  • Implant-supported bridge: supported by dental implants when appropriate

Planning and treatment

Your dentist will examine the area and may take X-rays or digital scans. If a tooth-supported bridge is selected, the supporting teeth are prepared and a temporary restoration may be placed while the final bridge is made. The dentist checks its appearance, contacts, and bite before securing it.

Caring for a bridge

Daily cleaning under the replacement tooth is essential. Floss threaders, interdental brushes, or a water flosser may help. Regular examinations allow the dentist to monitor the bridge and supporting teeth.
